Chapter 1: Jackets with Intention, from Design to Stitch

Welcome to the first chapter of Studio Ireiba’s blog. I’m Ireiba, a Venezuelan creator and Fashion Design student at Harper College. This space is an invitation to take a closer look at fashion: the ideas, materials, and thoughtful decisions that give a handmade piece its meaning.

To begin, I want to explore the bohemian-inspired jacket as a starting point for talking about design and sewing. More than a trend, it can be a canvas for experimenting with silhouettes, textures, and personal details.

Design begins with intention

Before choosing a fabric, it helps to ask what we want to express and how we want the garment to feel. A relaxed silhouette can offer freedom of movement, while a more structured shape can emphasize form. Sketching gives us room to explore these choices before construction begins.

Fabric shapes the design

Cotton, suede, velvet, and textured fabrics can each create a very different result. Color is only part of the decision: weight, drape, and thickness influence both the silhouette and how the material is sewn. Testing a small sample helps reveal how a fabric behaves before cutting the full piece.

Details tell a story

Embroidery, fringe, and patchwork can bring personality to a jacket. The key is to choose them thoughtfully rather than add everything at once. One well-placed detail can become the focus of a design.

From idea to stitch

A design process might begin with a sketch, continue with materials and a pattern, and then move into a fitting sample. Before making the final garment, checking proportions, movement, and finishes helps bring the result closer to the original idea. Sewing does more than join pieces together: it shapes and refines the design.

A new chapter for Studio Ireiba

At Studio Ireiba, I share handmade accessories, upcycled pieces, and the creative process behind each design. This first chapter opens a space to explore sewing, fashion design, and the value of making something meaningful by hand.

Thank you for being part of this beginning. The story continues, one stitch at a time.
